A 90-day plan
The Winter Arc challenge: rules and a 90-day plan
Winter Arc has no official rulebook, which is freeing but can make it hard to begin. Here is a simple, flexible structure you can adopt or adapt for your own season.
Seven simple Winter Arc rules
- Set a season. Choose clear start and end dates, for example October 1 to December 31.
- Keep a written “why”. Describe the person you are becoming and read it often.
- Choose 3–5 goals. Cover different parts of life: body, mind, skills, and environment.
- Move every day. A workout, a run, or a long walk. Intensity can vary; showing up does not.
- Feed your mind daily. Read, study, or practise a skill for at least 20–30 minutes.
- Protect your sleep and attention. A consistent bedtime and less mindless scrolling make every other goal easier.
- Check in and review. Log each day briefly and run a short weekly review.
Notice what is missing: there is no rule that you must restart if you miss a day. That is a deliberate difference from stricter challenges like 75 Hard.
The 90-day plan in three phases
Phase 1 · Days 1–30: Foundation
Build the routine before you build intensity. Choose fixed times for your goals, prepare your environment (gym bag packed, phone out of the bedroom), and aim simply to show up. If a goal feels too heavy, make it smaller until it is easy to start.
Phase 2 · Days 31–60: Momentum
Now raise the level a little: add weight or distance, study for longer, or take on a harder project. Use your weekly reviews to remove what is not working and double down on what is.
Phase 3 · Days 61–90: Finish strong
The holidays bring disruption, so plan for it. Set minimum versions of each goal for busy days, look back at how far you have come, and decide what you will carry into the new year.
Daily Winter Arc checklist
- Move your body (workout, run, or a 30-minute walk)
- Work on your main skill or project
- Read or study for 20–30 minutes
- Drink enough water and eat a proper meal
- Limit social media to a set window
- Write a two-line check-in: what you did, how you felt
- In bed at your target time
Adapt it to your goals. See more options in our list of Winter Arc ideas.
The weekly review
Once a week, spend ten minutes answering three questions:
- What went well, and why?
- What got in the way?
- What one change will make next week easier?
A monthly review at the end of each phase helps you see the bigger picture and adjust your goals before the next phase.
How to stay consistent
- Lower the bar on bad days. Ten minutes still counts and keeps the habit alive.
- Track honestly. Seeing a week of check-ins is motivating; seeing gaps tells you what to fix.
- Attach habits to anchors. Read after dinner, train before work, review on Sunday evening.
- Rest on purpose. Planned rest days prevent unplanned burnout.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to restart if I miss a day?
No. Winter Arc has no official restart rule. Missing a day is information, not failure. Pick up where you left off.
Can I start the Winter Arc challenge late?
Yes. Set your own 90 days, or simply run from today until December 31.
How many goals should I have?
Three to five is a good range. Enough to cover different areas of life, but few enough to do consistently.
